Pengcheng Dongshan Monastery of Shenzen City is just 5 minutes from the official worlds resort and sailing venue. The amazing Buddhist monastery is renown, for its traditional practice of Dongshan, a sect of the Zen school. The eye catching structure is situated south of the huge granite cliffs that dominate the dragon shaped Mount Longtuo (meaning head of the dragon) and to the east of incredible Dapeng Fortress. The monastery was originally built over 600 years ago, but has had to be refurbished due to pilfering, decay and destruction over hundreds of years, which left the historical building in ruins. Now standing are a spectacular group of buildings, that are bright and awe-inspiring, with glazed roof tiles, exquisite carvings and vivid paintings, the result of a rebuild in 2009. A visit to the monastery is definitely not to be missed by anyone travelling to the world championships, it’s something you will never forget. You’ll want to go back for one more look.
Divided into 6 amazing sections, The Shenzhen Dapeng Peninsula National Geopark Museum, is a modern contemporary structure that has incredible exhibits which capture the imagination, are visually stunning and highly educational. Enter through the Preface Hall and proceed into a superb space specifically dedicated to Earth Exploration, there is a specialised Dapeng Peninsula exhibit that focuses on the local area, a Mineral Hall that has some totally amazing specimens on display and the City and Geological Environment Hall is a wonder in itself. The world class museum also offers temporary space for travelling and special featured events. It also features a 3D Science Theatre, a Multifunctional Hall and an outdoor Dinosaur Exhibition Zone. Don’t leave Dapeng without spending a least a couple of hours exploring these fascinating halls of science. Open 09:30 – 16:30 Tue to Sun (closed Mondays)
Nestled just 3km from the Longqi Beach sailing venue and event accommodation, sits the Dapeng Military Fort, a must see for any visitor during the worlds. Your mind will be taken back to the ancient days of China where the surrounding walls were defence ramparts built to repel marauding pirates who ravaged the coastal town and its inhabitants hundreds of years ago. Originally built in the Ming Dynasty (1394 AD) it is shrouded in history and its architecture, its cobblestone laneways, impressive doorways, courtyards and roof lines all ooze of ancient, oriental China. Still thriving today, it is populated with the sounds of street markets and the fragrances of unique, clean restaurants that produce delicious fresh food that will tempt any palate. Just a pleasant bike ride away, you’ll want to go there time and time again.
Just a short 2 minute stroll from the worlds resort is the famous Shuitou Seafood Street. The strip is a long stretch of road that has fish vendors located all of the way down one side of the road. Each shop displays all manner of live fish, crustaceans and other sea creatures swimming in aerated water filled tanks waiting for you to make a personal choice for dinner. Pick whatever you want and the fish monger will net it for you to take across to the huge line of restaurants on the opposite side of the street. The restaurant staff will take your seafood selection and prepare it for you there and then. You can’t get better service or a fresher, more tasty meal than that.
The area surrounding the worlds venue and resort defines the developing Chinese culture. The people are happy, friendly and always ready to greet a visitor with a welcoming “Ni Hao”, or a “Hello”, as they all love the opportunity to practice their English skills. The visible variety of the local architecture, the technology, transportation and lifestyles are an eclectic mix that will tantalise the tastes of everyone who visits the 2016 Hobie 16 Worlds.
